First-person notes on product decisions, execution, and lessons from this project.

Goodstart CEFR is a planned project designed to help Brazilian students better understand their English level and what each stage of the learning process actually represents.

The idea behind the project is to turn the CEFR — the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — into a clearer, more accessible, and more practical experience. Many students use terms such as “beginner,” “intermediate,” or “advanced,” but they do not always know what those terms mean in real communication situations.

Goodstart CEFR aims to solve this problem by creating a bridge between diagnosis, pedagogical guidance, and the student’s study journey.

What will be built

The project was designed as a digital experience to explain English levels, guide students, and support study decisions.

The main planned elements include:

  • explanatory pages about levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2;
  • practical examples of what students can do at each level;
  • guided self-assessment to help students understand where they are;
  • a possible placement test with progressive questions;
  • study recommendations connected to the student’s level;
  • guidance on specific skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing;
  • connection with Goodstart+ content, courses, and learning paths;
  • a simple experience for beginner students and adults who are not familiar with the CEFR.

Role in the project

In this project, my role will be to structure the complete experience: concept, content architecture, interface, diagnostic logic, and technical implementation.

The main challenge is to translate a technical and educational framework into something students can understand quickly. The experience needs to be useful both for people who are just starting and for those who have studied English before but still do not know exactly where they are or which path to follow.

Beyond the pedagogical side, the project also has a strategic function within Goodstart: helping new students understand their current situation and see the next step inside the school or platform more clearly.

Product and technology decisions

Goodstart CEFR will be structured with a focus on clarity, performance, and editorial scalability. The choice of Astro, TypeScript, Cloudflare, and MDX makes it possible to create a fast, organized foundation that is easy to expand.

The architecture should support both informational pages and more interactive experiences, such as quizzes, self-assessments, and personalized recommendations.

The project prioritizes:

  • simple explanations about English levels;
  • real examples of language use at each stage;
  • a friendly experience for Brazilian students;
  • clear navigation between levels;
  • a foundation prepared for tests and diagnostics;
  • connection with Goodstart content and courses;
  • SEO potential for searches about English level and the CEFR.

Expected result

Goodstart CEFR is still in the planning phase, but it has the potential to become an important tool within the Goodstart ecosystem.

The project can help students better understand their own journey, reduce doubts at the beginning of the enrollment process, and support clearer decisions about courses, learning paths, and content.

In addition, the website can work as a public acquisition channel, attracting people who are trying to understand their English level and guiding them toward a more complete experience within Goodstart.

Once developed, Goodstart CEFR should reinforce a central Goodstart idea: learning English becomes clearer when students understand where they are, what they can already do, and what the next step is.
